5 Mature Skin Makeup Non-Negotiables for Women Over 40
If you’re learning makeup after 40, the goal isn’t to follow more rules. It’s to understand what your skin needs now. These are the five mature-skin makeup non-negotiables that have changed the way I apply my makeup, from skin prep and lighter layers to strategic powder and long-wearing hydration.
I didn’t really learn how to do my makeup until I was 38.
And honestly, I think that’s one of the reasons I approach makeup differently now.
I wasn’t following the same makeup routine I had been doing since my twenties and suddenly wondering why it stopped working. I was learning my skin and learning makeup at the same time.
Now that I’m in my 40s, I’ve realized that mature skin doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing the makeup you love. You don’t have to give up shimmer. You don’t have to avoid a full face. And you definitely don’t have to settle for boring makeup.
But I do think there are a few things that can make a HUGE difference in how makeup looks and wears on our skin.
These are my five mature-skin makeup non-negotiables.

1. Skin Prep Is Part of the Makeup Routine
I will never stop saying this: your makeup can only look as good as the skin underneath it.
Especially if you have mature or dry skin.
I used to think of skincare and makeup as two completely separate routines. Now, I look at my skin prep as the first step of my makeup application.
I want my skin hydrated, comfortable and plump before foundation ever touches my face.
That doesn't mean using fifteen skincare products before makeup. In fact, sometimes layering too much can create its own problems.
The goal is simply to make sure my skin isn't already feeling dry before I start applying complexion products.
For me, hydration is always the priority.
What I look for: hydrating serums, lightweight moisturizers, skin-prepping mists and primers that give my complexion some extra moisture without making everything slide around.
2. Less Product Usually Looks Better
This might be the biggest lesson I've learned about makeup after 40:
More product does not automatically equal a better result.
I would rather start with a small amount of foundation or concealer and build coverage exactly where I need it.
When I pile complexion products onto my face, that's when I start noticing makeup settling into texture, fine lines and dry areas.
Thin layers give me so much more control.
I'll apply a light layer of foundation first, step back and actually look at my skin. Then I'll decide whether I need more coverage.
Most of the time, I don't.
And this applies to concealer too.
I don't need a huge triangle of concealer underneath my eyes. I need enough product to brighten and even things out without creating another layer that I now have to set with even more powder.
Makeup doesn't have to completely erase your skin to look beautiful.
3. Formula Matters More to Me Than the Label
I'm much more interested in how a product behaves on my skin than whether the packaging says it's for mature skin.
Give me hydration.
Give me flexibility.
Give me formulas that blend easily and don't immediately cling to every dry patch on my face.
That's why I tend to gravitate toward hydrating foundations, creamy concealers, cream and liquid cheek products and complexion products that still allow my skin to look like skin.
But here's something else I want women over 40 to hear:
You are not too old for shimmer.
I love shimmer.
I love a beautiful glowing cheek. I love a sparkly eye. I love makeup that actually looks FUN.
Getting older didn't suddenly mean I had to trade all of that for beige matte eyeshadow.
The difference is that now I'm more intentional about the formulas I choose and where I place them.
That is what mature-skin makeup should be about to me. Not creating a list of things we're suddenly forbidden from wearing.
4. Powder Has a Job. It Doesn't Need to Go Everywhere.
There was definitely a time when I thought setting your makeup meant powdering your entire face.
Not anymore.
Powder is one of those products that I use very strategically now.
I want to set the areas that actually need help staying in place without removing all of the hydration and life I just worked so hard to put back into my complexion.
For me, that might mean lightly setting underneath my eyes, around my nose or anywhere I tend to get extra movement.
The rest of my face doesn't automatically need powder just because I'm wearing foundation.
And the amount matters too.
A light layer can blur and set beautifully.
Too much can make my skin look significantly drier than it actually is.
My rule is simple: powder with a purpose.
5. I Need My Makeup to Last Without Making My Skin Feel Dry
Long-wearing makeup and mature skin can sometimes feel like they're fighting each other.
I want my makeup to stay on my face.
I also don't want to feel like somebody shrink-wrapped my skin by lunchtime.
That's why primers and setting sprays have become such an important part of my routine.
I'm looking for products that help everything grip and last while still allowing my complexion to feel comfortable.
There are days when I need my makeup to survive filming, errands, meetings and whatever else I've managed to put on my calendar.
A good setting spray makes a noticeable difference for me.
And when I find one that gives me longevity and hydration?
That becomes a repeat purchase.

I've put some of the products I personally use for these steps into one collection so you don't have to search for everything individually.
Whether you're rebuilding your makeup bag, learning makeup later in life or just trying to figure out what works better for your skin now, these are the types of products I consistently reach for.
Makeup After 40 Doesn't Need More Rules
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this, it's that getting older doesn't mean makeup has to become more restrictive.
I actually think it can become more fun.
I started learning makeup at 38, and some of my favorite looks and products have come after 40.
The biggest difference is that now I understand my skin better.
I know when it needs more hydration.
I know when I'm using too much product.
I know that I don't need powder everywhere.
And I know that I can still wear shimmer, bold lips, colorful blush or anything else that makes me excited to sit down at my vanity.
You don't need a completely different makeup rulebook because you're over 40.
You just need to understand what your skin needs now.
And if you're learning right along with me, you're exactly where you're supposed to be.

Luxury vs. Drugstore: The Products I Actually Think Are Worth the Splurge for Mature Skin
Not sure when to save and when to splurge? I’m breaking down the luxury and drugstore beauty products I actually think are worth the money for mature skin.
If you're anything like me, you've probably stood in Sephora holding a luxury product in one hand and your phone in the other, wondering if there's a drugstore version that does the exact same thing.
As a beauty creator in my 40s, I test products from both ends of the beauty spectrum all the time. And while there are absolutely some luxury products that earn their price tag, there are also plenty of affordable options that perform just as well.
So if you're trying to decide where to save and where to splurge, here's exactly where I think your money matters most when it comes to mature skin.
Worth the Splurge: Foundation
If I could only splurge on one makeup category, it would probably be foundation.
As our skin changes, we often become more aware of texture, dryness, fine lines, and how products wear throughout the day. A good foundation can make a huge difference in how polished your makeup looks.
One of my all-time favorites is Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. It gives my skin a radiant finish without looking heavy or settling into fine lines. It's one of those products that consistently makes my skin look healthy and glowing.
I also love the Patrick Ta Major Skin Foundation for days when I want a little more coverage without sacrificing luminosity.
Can you find good drugstore foundations? Absolutely. But if foundation is the centerpiece of your makeup routine, this is one area where I think a luxury formula can be worth the investment.
My verdict: Splurge.

Save Your Money: Blush
The blush market has become incredibly competitive, and honestly, some of my favorite blushes aren't luxury at all.
The new e.l.f. Soft Glam Blushes are beautiful, blend easily, and give a soft, healthy flush to the skin. Milani continues to create stunning blush formulas, and I've found myself reaching for affordable options just as often as my higher-end favorites.
While I still enjoy luxury blushes, I don't think they're necessary to achieve a beautiful makeup look.
My verdict: Save.
Worth the Splurge: Setting Powder
Powder can make or break makeup on mature skin.
The wrong powder can instantly make your makeup look dry, cakey, or overly textured. The right powder can smooth, blur, and help your makeup last without looking heavy.
This is one of the reasons products like Givenchy Prisme Libre became so popular. They managed to set the skin while still allowing it to look like skin.
I've also had incredible results with Danessa Myricks Evolution Powder and other higher-end formulas that focus on blurring rather than mattifying the life out of your face.
That said, drugstore brands are catching up fast. I'm currently testing the new e.l.f. Set It Bright Correcting & Brightening Powder to see how it compares.
My verdict: If powder is where your makeup usually goes wrong, splurge.

Save Your Money: Lip Products
This one is easy.
Drugstore lip products are amazing right now.
The Maybelline Lifter Glosses continue to be some of my most-used lip products. Affordable lip liners have improved dramatically, and there are countless drugstore lipsticks and glosses that perform beautifully.
Luxury lip products are fun, but I don't think they're where most people need to spend their money.
My verdict: Save.
Worth the Splurge: Skincare That Supports Your Makeup
I don't believe every skincare product needs to be expensive.
But I do believe healthy skin makes every makeup product perform better.
The products I tend to invest in are the ones that directly affect how my makeup applies and wears throughout the day. Hydrating serums, nourishing moisturizers, and barrier-supporting products can completely change how your foundation sits on the skin.
When my skincare routine is working, my makeup routine becomes easier.
That's why I focus on strategic skincare splurges rather than buying expensive products across the board.
My verdict: Invest strategically.

Save Your Money: Eyeshadow
This category has changed so much over the last few years.
Affordable brands are producing beautiful formulas, impressive pigmentation, and incredible special-effect shadows.
One of my recent favorite discoveries has been the Wet n Wild Chameleon Chrome Eyeshadows. The shifts are absolutely stunning, and at under $5, they completely exceeded my expectations.
I've also found amazing formulas from e.l.f., ColourPop, and other affordable brands that perform far above their price point.
My verdict: Save.
My Luxury Beauty Favorites That Are Worth Every Penny
If I had to narrow it down to the luxury beauty products that consistently earn a place in my routine, these would be the ones I continue reaching for again and again.
These aren't products I love because they're expensive. They're products I love because they perform.
They're the products that make me feel confident when I'm filming content, heading to an event, or simply getting ready for the day.

Some of the products you'll find in this collection include:
Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Patrick Ta Major Skin Foundation
Danessa Myricks Evolution Powder
Haus Labs Fire Opal Highlighter
Merit Solo Sheen Eyeshadow
Armani Beauty Bronzer
Rhode Pocket Blush
Tatcha Water Cream
These are the products that have repeatedly impressed me and earned a permanent spot in my collection.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned as a beauty creator is that expensive doesn't automatically mean better.
Some categories truly benefit from a luxury formula, while others have incredible affordable alternatives that perform just as well.
For me, foundation, powder, and strategic skincare are the categories most worth investing in. Blush, lip products, and eyeshadow are where I save my money without feeling like I'm sacrificing performance.
At the end of the day, the goal isn't to own the most expensive makeup.
The goal is to find products that make you feel confident, beautiful, and excited to sit down at your vanity every morning.
And sometimes, those products cost $60.
Sometimes they cost $5.
The magic is knowing the difference.
Best Setting Powders for Mature Skin (Lightweight & Non-Drying Picks)
Struggling to find a setting powder that doesn’t make your skin look dry or textured? These lightweight, non-drying powders are perfect for mature skin and give you a smooth, natural finish without settling into fine lines.
Listen…setting powder can either make your makeup look flawless, or instantly age you.
And if you have mature skin, you already know the wrong powder will have you looking dry, textured, and wondering where your glow went 😩
So instead of skipping powder completely (because we still want things set and smooth), the key is using the right powders, the ones that are lightweight, finely milled, and don’t suck the life out of your skin.
These are the ones I actually use and trust on my skin.
And yes, I linked everything in my ShopMy for you 👀
1. LYS Triple Fix Setting Powder (My #1 Recommendation)
If you take nothing else from this post, take this.
This powder is SO lightweight, it almost feels like nothing on the skin. But somehow, it still sets your makeup and gives you the most natural, polished finish.
It doesn’t look dry, it doesn’t cling, and it doesn’t make your under eyes look heavy. It just smooths everything out.
Why it works for mature skin:
Ultra lightweight formula
Gives a soft, natural glow (not flat or matte)
Doesn’t settle into fine lines
👉🏾 This is a staple for me—I linked it in my ShopMy
2. Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder
This one is a little different, but in the best way.
It’s technically a balm-to-powder, and it gives you this soft blurred effect that makes your skin look smoother without looking dry or cakey.
I love using this in areas where I want to control shine without losing that skin-like finish.
Why it works for mature skin:
Blurs texture beautifully
Controls shine without dryness
Keeps the skin looking like skin
👉🏾 If you struggle with texture, this is a must try—linked in my ShopMy
3. Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Loose Setting Powder
Now this one, you just have to know how to use it.
This is not the powder I’m packing heavily under my eyes. But for the perimeter of the face? Chef’s kiss.
It helps set everything in place and gives a soft matte finish where you need it—without taking away from the glow in the center of your face.
Why it works for mature skin:
Great for targeted setting (not full face)
Smooths without heaviness
Keeps makeup in place all day
👉🏾 I use this strategically—and yes, it’s linked
4. Kosas Cloud Set Baked Setting Powder
If you’re someone who hates the feeling of powder, this is for you.
It’s baked, super lightweight, and gives more of a soft blur than a full set. It’s perfect for those “no makeup, makeup” days or when you just want to lightly set your skin without overdoing it.
Why it works for mature skin:
Never looks heavy or cakey
Gives a soft, diffused finish
Perfect for light setting days
👉🏾 This one is so easy to use—I linked it for you
Final Thoughts
With mature skin, it’s not about avoiding powder, it’s about using it differently.
You don’t need a heavy layer. You don’t need to bake. And you definitely don’t need anything that makes your skin look dry.
The right powders will:
Smooth your skin
Set your makeup
Keep your glow intact
And NOT emphasize fine lines
Start with one of these, and you’ll see the difference immediately.
